Buying a mattress online | Everything you need to know

Got a spare few hours up your sleeve? We didn’t think so. Fancy spending $$$ on something without trying it first? No, you’re smarter than that. Keen to take a chance on something that may make you feel even more tired than you do just now? Nah, definitely not. What’re we talking about? Mattress shopping of course. Buying a mattress online isn’t just as good as buying in-store — it’s even better. Here’s why you need to buy your next mattress online.

Should I buy a mattress online?

Yes, you should. Jump online now — Koala makes it easy. Most of us buy mattresses in a store because that’s what we’ve always done. You head to the showroom, lie on some plastic-covered mattresses and get cornered by a salesperson. They give you some advice but based on what?! You don’t even know what advice you need because you only go to buy a new mattress every 10 years or so. It’s not exactly something you’re an expert in. But, you need a new mattress and the salesperson talks you into the most expensive one so you part with your cash before heading home to wait for it to be delivered at a time that suits the store (sometimes weeks or even months after you’ve paid for it). Buying a mattress online is just so much simpler.

Why buying a mattress online is better

Don’t just take our word for it. “You need at least seven minutes to try out a mattress in-store to even provide just a basic idea of if it may be for you. It’s simply not enough time,” says Olivia Arezzolo, Australia’s leading sleep expert. “The best way to test a mattress is to have a real-life experience with it over several nights.” We couldn’t agree more, Olivia. That’s why when you buy a Koala mattress, you have 120 nights to try it out. If it’s not right within that time, you can return it and get the cost of your mattress back. “I think the other consideration of a mattress store is that the staff are designed to sell mattresses,” Olivia adds. “They’re not sleep experts.” There are lots of considerations when deciding on the best mattress for you, such as your sleeping position preferences and physical health history. In-store salespeople won’t necessarily consider all those factors as they’re employed to get as many sales out the door as possible. In contrast, buying online is so easy — no battles in the shopping centre car park, no one watching as you lie awkwardly on 10 mattresses. In fact, no leaving the house.

How to buy a mattress online

Okay, so what’s the best way to buy online? You’ll need to think about your needs (do you want more support, extra comfort, do you have a wiggly partner?) and your budget. If only there was some kind of online quiz you could take that would tell you the mattress that’s right for you...
Should you buy a mattress online? They may be biased but this couple on one of our Koala mattresses definitely say yes. Should you buy a mattress online? Yes, indeed.

Delivery day

What happens on delivery day? Well… 🚚 Your mattress will be delivered in your chosen delivery window and will come in two long rectangular boxes which you should be able to easily pull inside. 🚚 Get your mattress out of the box as soon as you can. Then go make a cuppa and give it an hour to decompress. 🚚 If you notice a smell, open some windows and give the mattress some air. We promise we don’t use nasty chemicals in our products! That smell is just the decompression process in action. 🚚 Zip on the flippable comfort layer — we recommend you keep it on the medium-firm side for the first few nights. But if you think firm is more your jam, flip it over and see how you go on the fourth night. Not sure if firm is your jam? Take our ‘Which mattress is right for you’ quiz. 🚚 Make the bed up and jump in for your first night’s sleep. 🚚 By night seven you’ll know whether you want to flip the comfort layer or leave it where it is. 🚚 After two weeks, if you’re not totally happy, give us a bell and we’ll chat about a refund. Like a new pair of shoes, a new mattress can take time to get used to. And, don’t forget you actually have 120 nights to see if you like it! Once you’ve got your new Koala mattress, we reckon you’ll pretty quickly realise buying online is the best way to buy a mattress. See ya fluorescent lights and sleazy salespeople!

We’re here to help

How does ‘try before you buy’ really work?

We’re not kidding about the 120-night trial. This return policy applies to all Koala products. Your body might take some time to adjust, so we recommend you give pillows and mattresses a go for at least 14 nights before you decide whether you love it or not.

What happens to returned items?

When we receive a product back, it’s donated to charity, recycled or, if it’s still in really good nick, we send it to Koala Second Home.

What should I do with the packaging?

Flatten all the cardboard and get that into your recycling bin. We recommend cutting up the plastics — including the bags and bubble wrap — and scrunching them together, then popping them in the REDcycle program collection bins at participating Coles and Woolies supermarkets. Easy peasy.

Is delivery really free?

It sure is. We offer free delivery for all mattress orders.
