-
A growing range of Koala AU furniture is FSC® certified, including sofa beds, bed frames and bases, and our outdoor dining collections (full list below).
-
FSC® Forest Week 2026 runs from 21 to 27 September, when FSC® licence holders worldwide celebrate sustainable forestry.
What Is the FSC®?
The FSC® is an international not-for-profit organisation dedicated to protecting the forests that people and wildlife call home. Acting as the world's most trusted forest certification scheme, the FSC® sets sustainability standards for the production of wood and paper-based products, covering:
-
The protection of animal habitats
-
The maintenance of biodiversity
-
Protection of old-growth trees
-
Zero deforestation
-
Protecting the rights of indigenous people
-
Fair wages and a safe working environment
-
Supporting local communities
A forest and its operations are recognised for upholding these practices through FSC® certification. If a material or product is sourced from a responsibly managed forest that meets FSC® standards, it can be FSC® certified. At Koala, we know just how important these responsibilities are, and we're proud to champion FSC® certification across a number of our products.
What Does FSC® Certification Mean?
Being FSC® certified means a forest operation meets ten principles covering conservation and community rights, assessed and confirmed by the Forest Stewardship Council® itself.
Fundamentally, these principles protect and maintain ecosystems to a strict standard of positive environmental impact.
Certification also confirms a responsibly managed community culture, where the wellbeing of workers and locals is held to a high standard. Who doesn't love that?
Koala's FSC® License Code is FSC® N003088. This code is our official registration with the Forest Stewardship Council® and confirms we're an authorised FSC® promotional licence holder in Australia.
What Do the FSC® Labels Mean?
There are three FSC® labels you might see on products, each signifying a different path to FSC® certification.
FSC® 100%
All of the forest-based materials in the product were sourced from 100% virgin fibre from FSC®-certified forests.
FSC® Recycled
All of the forest-based materials in the product are 100% recycled, from post-consumer and/or pre-consumer reclaimed materials, placing no additional pressure on forests.
FSC® Mix
The product is made from a mix of FSC®-certified virgin fibre, controlled sources, and/or recycled wood or fibre.
Buying FSC®-labelled products supports responsible forest management and encourages industry practitioners to maintain sustainable standards.
Why Does FSC® Certification Matter?
FSC® certification matters because it raises the bar across an entire industry, not just for one product. The organisation encourages forest management practices that contribute to global climate and biodiversity while promoting workplace equality, safety, and fairness, opening up economic opportunities for local communities.
The FSC® also tackles global climate change by eliminating deforestation, forest degradation, and illegal logging, work that has earned it support from respected environmental organisations including Greenpeace and the WWF.
As a consumer, buying FSC®-certified products increases demand for sustainably sourced timber and forest products, protecting those forests from deforestation while creating jobs and demand for labour. So next time you're buying wood or paper-based products, keep an eye out for the FSC® label.
What Is FSC® Forest Week 2026?
FSC® Forest Week 2026 runs from 21 to 27 September 2026, when FSC® licence holders around the world showcase their commitment to sustainable forestry (see fsc.org).
As an FSC® licence holder ourselves, Koala joins the celebration every year, and we'll be shouting about it (#FSCForestWeek) all week long, building on the momentum of last year’s campaign: “Do One Thing for Forests.”

FAQs
What does FSC® certified mean for furniture?
FSC® certification covers the entire journey of the timber, not just the forest floor. Every part of the supply chain along the way to the finished product (including the sawmill, processors, and the final manufacturing facility) must be certified to FSC’s standards.
This supply chain is audited by 3rd party auditors to verify they are meeting FSC’s standards.
In the Forest: Auditors verify sustainable harvesting limits, protection of local wildlife habitats and endangered ecosystems, fair wages and safe conditions for forestry workers, and respect for Indigenous land rights.
At the Processor (Sawmills & Factories): Auditors perform volume checks reconciling incoming certified raw timber with outgoing finished goods to ensure certified wood is strictly segregated from uncertified material during storage and manufacturing. Addtionaly these facilities must demonstrate they adhere to FSC’s social standards for labour rights and worker protection.
Look for the FSC® 100%, FSC® Recycled, or FSC® Mix label to see which standard a specific product meets. See “What do the FSC® labels mean?” above for the full breakdown.
How do I know if my Koala furniture is FSC® certified?
Check the product page and it will list if the timber material is FSC certified. If a product isn't listed on this page or its own product page, it isn't currently FSC® certified.
What is Koala's FSC Promotional License Code?
Koala's FSC® Promotional License Code is FSC® N003088. As a promotional license holder, this allows Koala to use FSC® logos and trademarks.
Is FSC certified furniture more expensive?
Not necessarily. FSC® certification reflects how the timber was sourced, not a premium tier of the product itself, so certified pieces sit at the same price point as the rest of our range. Any cost difference comes down to materials, design, and construction, not the certification.
Which Koala products are currently FSC certified?
FSC® certification currently applies to a growing range of Koala AU furniture; see the product table above for the current list. Coverage is expanding as more of our timber suppliers complete FSC® certification, so check the product page for the most up to date status before you buy.
