How to unbox and set up your brand new Koala Mattress
Share
Congratulations! If you’re reading this, you’ve probably just bought one of our brand new mattresses and your sleep game is about to rocket to a whole new level.
You may be a long time Koala-supporter, but if this is your first time unpacking the best bed-in-a-box in the business, then there are a couple of things you should consider when breaking in your new mattress. Let me run you through a few instructions on how to set up your new Koala Mattress!
Unboxing
Although it may not look like your everyday mattress (let’s face it, it’s much better), unboxing you Koala Mattress just takes 4 easy steps. Watch the video here!
- Open the box labeled ‘Base Layer’ and slide out the mattress
- Tear open the plastic seal
- Unroll the mattress, with the zipper side facing up
- Leave the mattress for at least an hour to give the foam time to decompress.
Once the mattress is completely decompressed, you can attach the Flippable KloudcellTM Comfort layer depending on your preference—but we’ll get to this a bit later. We’d recommend not waiting longer than one or two weeks to unbox your mattress.
Recycling
At Koala, we’re proud of our efforts to operate in the most environmentally sustainable way possible. Whilst waiting for your mattress to decompress, sort the mattress packaging into the different materials to be recycled.
The cardboard can be put into your recycling bin, and some councils will allow “LDPE 4” in your regular plastic recycling. If yours doesn’t, you can recycle the soft plastic at any REDcycle collection point. Please note: as of 9 November, 2022, REDcycle is on temporary pause. If you’d like to get rid of your old mattress, book a collection through Soft Landing, however this is only available in Sydney and Melbourne metro areas currently.
If recycling some of the materials isn’t possible in your area, check out our guide to reusing packaging materials here.
Zip & Flip
Everyone has different preferences when it comes to their mattress, that’s why we’ve designed our new mattress range (barring the Koala SE Mattress) to have a customisable comfort layer so you can switch from FIRM to MEDIUM-FIRM in a matter of seconds. Attaching the comfort layer to the base is super simple:
- Position the comfort layer on the base, and align the corners
- Snap the magnetic zipper heads in place
- Zip the comfort layer to the base
When you want to switch from MEDIUM-FIRM to FIRM (or vice versa), simply:
- Unzip
- Flip the comfort layer over
- Tuck in the comfort layer
- Connect the zipper
- Fully zip around the mattress
Your first 7 nights
Although all of our mattresses come with a risk-free, 120 night trial we recommend you spend at least seven nights sleeping on it. Just like a new pair of shoes, your mattress may take a few days to get just right. Here’s what you need to do for the first seven nights on your Koala Mattress to find out what works for you.
Nights 1-3
We recommend trialing the MEDIUM-FIRM side of the comfort layer for the first three nights to see how it interacts with your body. The comfort layer will be labeled on the same side that the zipper is located. It will take around 72 hours for the mattress to fully settle, and the foam will firm up over this period. We recommend using a mattress protector to help keep your new matty clean and looking its best.
Nights 4-6
If firmer is more to your liking, just unzip and flip the comfort layer to the FIRM side to try for the next three nights. It’s important to trial each side for more than a night to let your body and the mattress fully adjust. Even if you’re initially happy with the MEDIUM-FIRM side, you never know until you try!
Night 7
By now you will know which side of the comfort layer works best for you. Keep it on FIRM or flip it back to MEDIUM-FIRM.
It’s that simple! Now all that’s left is decking out the rest of your bedroom to match your snazzy new mattress. If you’re in need of some inspo, check out our smart bed bases and bedside tables with tool free assembly, as well as our luxurious and environmentally sustainable duvet and sheet sets.
