Easy peasy steps to remove period stains from mattress

It’s frustrating enough to get your sheets stained with period blood, but it’s even more upsetting if those get through onto your beloved mattress. And, what's worse, you're now faced with the challenge of how to remove period stains from mattress.

First off - you're not alone. Nobody likes to wake up in the morning and discover that you’ve bled through all the layers underneath you.

With a little bit of effort and some help from readily available homemade materials, you can get rid of the stain completely. Here's a little guide on how to remove period blood from mattress!

Treat the stain ASAP

The secret to removing period stains from your mattress is to treat the blood stain as soon as you notice it to have a better chance of getting rid of it completely. Blood stains are not only unsightly and embarrassing. They can cause the spread of harmful bacteria and, like other stains and spills, can significantly reduce the lifespan and quality of your mattress.

To remove blood stains from a mattress you can use many of the same methods as for the sheets with the difference that you don’t use as much water. Use dampened clothes and be careful not to soak the mattress as it will take it forever to dry. Too much water can also damage the mattress and contribute to the spread of mildew and bacteria.

Remove period stains from mattress with a little help from your pantry

Soak a cloth in cold water and dab at the stain. Remember to use cold water as it dissolves the blood, while hot water would cook the blood, locking it in the fabric.

Get some help from some readily available items in your pantry:

  1. Meat tenderizer is a great helper not only when it comes to your steaks but also for getting rid of blood stains. Mix some meat tenderizer and water to make a paste and rub it into your mattress. Let it sit for an hour then remove with a cloth soaked in cold water.
  2. Apply some hydrogen peroxide onto the stain, and let it “bubble”. Then dab at it with a dampened cloth. Repeat several times if necessary.
  3. Mix baking soda and some cold water to make a paste, apply to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes. Remove with a damp cloth.
  4. Mix some baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and apply the mixture onto the stain. Let it sit, then clean it off with a damp cloth.

Always let the mattress air dry completely after you treat the stain. Use a fan if necessary to help it dry more quickly, or if it’s cold inside.

Make sure you protect yourself

Now that the stain is out, you can relax! We don't want to remind you of your mother (although she's one spritely lady), but now is the time to pop a mattress protector in your cart and checkout. We hear your brain ticking over - do I need a mattress protector? Without harping on - but the best defence is a strong offence.

Or treat yourself to a freshie

Of course, it's never a bad thing to add new skills to your arsenal: and "how to remove period stains from mattress" is something well worth knowing. However, if you're battling years' worth of stains, or you've been carting yours around for years singe it was given to you second hand by your great-great Aunt; it might be time to invest in a brand-spanking-new mattress to nourish you for years to come.
