Is a pocket spring mattress my best option?

PSA: Read this before you purchase a pocket spring mattress!

Chances are when you hear the word “mattress” you imagine a large rectangular pad with tufted surface filled with springs.

Even with the latest advances in the mattress industry and the increased popularity of other mattress designs, many people still adhere to the misconception that to be really supportive a mattress needs springs.

Are pocket spring mattresses the best? No, and here is why it’s a misconception.

What does support mean?

First, let’s be clear on what support is and why it’s important.

What you want from a pocket spring mattress is two things: comfort and support. Comfort refers to how the mattress feels when you lie down on it and mostly has to do with its level of firmness. It is likely the first thing you notice when you try a new mattress.

Support, on the other hand, refers to how well your mattress is able to promote the body’s correct spinal alignment.

Our spine is comprised of three natural curves: the top “c-shaped” curve of the neck (cervical part), the “reverse c-shaped” of the upper back (thoracic spine), and the “c-shaped” curve of the lower back (lumbar spine).

These curves are there to help our bodies stand upright.

A good mattress needs to promote correct spinal alignment, that is to provide adequate support to all three curves. If it doesn’t do it, you will suffer from chronic back pain.

How mattresses provide support

Generally, a pocket spring mattress can come in several different levels of firmness, depending on the number of springs in a mattress, aiming to provide appropriate support for different body types. You will find spring mattresses recommended for light-weight people, medium-weight people, and heavy-weight people. But even with these categories, spring mattresses are still mostly a one-size-fit-all system. Why? Because the number of body types and sizes out there are more than 3, or even more than 11. The number of body types is infinite because everyone’s body is unique.

Our mattresses on the other hand are designed to align with your particular body. A good mattress will be able to evenly distribute your body weight, supporting individual pressure points and achieving the perfect level of support. And it will continue to do so for years to come, while a spring mattress (even the best quality one) will eventually sag. Koala’s mattress even comes with 10 Year Full Warranty!

The Koala mattress range is made of two levels, a firmer bottom level for support made of high density Ecofoam, and a top comfort layer that is softer called Kloudcell. The Kloudcell layer is an open cell foam that dissipates heat so it’s cool to the touch, and what makes you feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud without the heat, and sweatiness that memory foam or latex provides. We have a firmer support base right beneath the hips that prevents your body from sinking into the mattress. This comes in real handy when it comes to helping you maintain a healthy sleeping posture.

Mattresses and back pain

When it comes to promoting correct spinal alignment and dealing with back pain, Koala is there to help you get the support, and proper sleep you need, and deserve! With over 50,000 5 star reviews since 2015, the Koala Mattress Range is comprised of Australia's highest-rated and reviewed mattresses.

If you sleep on a spring mattress, your body will be forced to adjust to the mattress thus exacerbating the back pain. That’s because on a spring mattress there will always be a space left between your lower back and your mattress, meaning that your lower back is not properly supported.

On a Kloudcell Koala Mattress, on the other hand, the mattress will contour to your body shape allowing your muscles to relax and creating the ultimate support.

Supportive Edges

Are you an edge sleeper? You'd be surprised to find out that this is actually way more common than you might think. In other mattress options, you'll find a solid base of support in the middle of the build, which decreases dramatically toward the edges. So what did we did about this? Look no further than the Calm As Mattress and the Soul Mate Mattress!

Known around our neck of the woods as StayPut Edge Support, the chances of anyone sliding off these beds are slim to none. Calm As and Soul Mate are built with 5 and 6 support layers respectively (up from the 3 in the Koala Mattress) getting you to sleep, and keeping you there for hours uninterrupted.
