Choosing your new mattress
We know a thing or two about mattresses. And we know that choosing the right mattress is the secret to you sleeping better at night. Are the kids going through a growth spurt? Have you just met a potential new bed partner? Do you love your space and sleep best when starfishing? These are just some of the questions to ask yourself when you’re shopping for a new mattress. You need to think about what you need right now and what you might need in the future. Bella Vie Interiors principal Interior designer Lisa Alward explains. “You need to get the size right. King mattresses, for example, are a good option for taller people because you’ve got that extra length. They’re also good for couples who like to have more space to sleep or for families where the kids often hop into bed. And if your kids need a mattress upgrade, you might consider skipping the king single and going straight to a double. It’ll last them longer!”Getting the right fit
You also need to think about the size of your room and what’s physically going to fit. To avoid a tight squeeze, Lisa recommends having at least 60 to 90 centimetres of space from the edge of the bed to the walls. “If you’ve got cupboards or drawers, you might need more space to open those doors. But if you’ve got sliding doors on your wardrobes, you’ll be able to manage with less space. Either way, you want to make sure you can move around the bed easily.” You also need to consider the space you have available. If you have the space for a king mattress, go for it! If you’re tight on space in a guest room, for example, a double might be better — they take up less room but are still comfy as for single adults. They’re also handy if you’re on a budget. Speaking of handy, sofa beds are also a flexible option for the spatially challenged. Remember, when it comes to beds, the bigger you go, the more you’ll have to spend. That includes bedding, linen and bed bases.
Getting your bedding right
Turns out, bigger really is better — when it comes to making your bed, that is. According to Lisa, you need to choose a duvet that’s one size bigger than your mattress. Got a double mattress? You’ll want a queen-size duvet. Sitting pretty on a queen-size mattress? Opt for a king-size duvet. “An oversized duvet allows for a nice overhang at the end and the sides of your bed,” says Lisa. “Not only does it look better, but it also keeps warm air in the bed so that you stay warmer at night.” For all you independent sleepers out there, this also means you can stay cocooned on your side of the bed and say cya later to that late-night duvet tug of war!Australian mattress sizes
