Who Thought a Green Sea Turtle Could Be Saved by a Koala?
Our warming climate and increasing temperatures in the northern Great Barrier Reef are turning populations of marine turtles almost completely female. Koala is partnering with WWF-Australia, the Queensland Government and the University of Queensland to undertake research to prevent this and possible population collapse.
It’s Time to Help Our Heroes in a Half-Shell
This unique research project trials practical methods to cool the sand temperature of sea turtle nests with the aim to stop the feminisation of the turtle population.
Recent key findings include that
- Natural palm-frond & artificial shading, combined with rain, were successful in cooling nests and producing 80% more male hatchlings.
- Hatchlings from shaded nests were faster and more active, which means they have a greater chance of survival 48 hours after emerging from their nests.
Those shade solutions will as the next step implemented and further discovered in other areas of Australia.
