Ah, spring. That wonderful time we’ve all been looking forward to. Warmer air, longer days, more sun and general aliveness. Those beautiful green sprouts that please the eye, enliven the soul and… release pollen.
If you suffer from spring allergies you are probably less inclined to was poetic about the wonders of spring and more to worry about how on earth you’re going handle breathing and sleeping in the next few weeks. The truth is that spring can make getting quality sleep more of a challenge for many of us. For one, springtime fatigue is a real thing – we feel more tired during the day (but that doesn’t always translate into better quality sleep at night). But for those suffering from spring allergies, getting quality sleep in the spring is a whole other level of challenge.
Here is what you can do to make it a little more achievable.
Keep your indoor air clean
While most people open their windows to freshen up their air, for allergy sufferers this is not an option. Instead of letting the outdoor air in, keep the windows shut and use an air purifier with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your bedroom.
Regularly check door and window seals to make sure there are no ways for allergens to sneak in.
Use air purifying plants
Get some air-purifying plants such as aloe or English ivy. Both are very easy to manage and are known for their fantastic filtering properties. Of course, whatever plants you choose, just make sure to do your research first to ensure they won’t make your allergies worse.
Keep your bedroom clean
Vacuuming your bedroom nightly will help get rid of pollen that’s come in through the windows during the day. Change your sheets frequently during this season, at least once a week, to keep them clean from pollen, dust and dead skin cells. Needless to say, keep Rocky out of your bed. As much as it was nice to snuggle up to him during the cold winter months, having your allergen-loaded furry friend in your sleeping space this season will throw all your cleaning efforts out of the window.
Get hypoallergenic bedding
Some bedding materials are better at keeping allergens away than others. To keep your sleeping space cleaner, consider investing in hypoallergenic bedding. That doesn’t mean you don’t have to wash it frequently, but it will make breathing freely more achievable between the washes.
Take a shower
The pollen and other allergens accumulates not only on your bed, floor and on Rocky’s fur but also on your skin and hair. Taking a shower before bed will help wash away the pollen accumulated in your hair and on your skin during the day.
Get a dehumidifier
Humidity can make your allergies worse. If you live in a humid climate, dehumidifier helps reduce the moisture that is such a great breeding ground for all kinds of allergens.
Of course, the air that’s too dry can make things worse as well, so make sure not to overdo it.
Replace your mattress and pillow
Not every season of course. But remember that your mattress needs replacing every 8-10 years and your pillow every year or two. Sleeping on an old mattress can make your allergies worse, so if yours is due to be replaced you might as well give yourself the gift of breathing and do it this spring.
