Your nightly skin routine should be effective, yes, but it should also be enjoyable. Of course it should! How else would you drag yourself away from the TV long enough to do it each night?
So, instead of telling you that you need to do a complicated 20-step routine to get glowing skin (you don’t), we’re going to stick to the essentials; a simple routine to get you happy, healthy skin before you start drooling all over your pillow/uniquely designed mattress that is both supportive and comfortable.
Let’s do this!
(Note! We recommend waiting at least one minute between each step to give your skin care a chance to sink in, and having pancakes for dinner no less than once a week.)
The rest of your skin care won’t work if you don’t properly cleanse first. So before anything else you must remove your makeup, sunscreen, grime, excess oil, and cake icing hanging around from the day.
Oil cleansers are exceptional for this. They basically melt away everything (even heavy duty makeup, or 63 layers of SPF) and leave the skin super clean and ludicrously soft. Apply onto the skin, and massage it in for at least 30 seconds. (This ensures good, even, thorough application and stimulates circulation.) Remove with a warm, damp muslin cloth, and note how soft and clean your skin feels.
Optional! Double cleanse
If you are happy that your first cleanse has left your skin soft and clean enough, then you can absolutely skip this. But! Double cleansing can be very beneficial, particularly for heavy makeup wearers, SPF users, or those with oily, combo, or congested skin. The idea being that after your first (oil-based) cleanser whisks away all the surface stuff, your second (water-based) cleanser is able to go deeper to give pores a deep clean and prevent build-up.
Your second cleanse will be water-based (ahem, like Go-To Properly Clean) and it should be gently massaged in for at least 30 seconds, before being rinsed off.
After cleansing, follow with a chemical exfoliator.
Exfoliating speeds up cell turnover; essentially it removes dead skin cells (known for causing congestion and dullness) which allows new skin cells to come through all fresh and glowy.
Important! Exfoliation is an enormously crucial part of any routine but it is not an Every Night Thing. Using your exfoliant of choice two or three nights a week is the ideal amount to avoid over-exfoliating.
This is where any targeted treatment products you may have will go. Think: toners, mists, essences, serums. Don’t use or need any of those? Head onto the next step!
4. Nourish & Protect
Next up: Face oil! Which act as the skin’s lipid barrier, sealing moisture in like cling wrap and preventing your skin from drying out. Face oils can also balance and regulate oil production, so they are suitable for all skin types. (Even oily.)
5. Instagram Interlude
Not essential but heavily encouraged. 5 minutes should do is very unrealistic. Aim for 10 instead. Go-To have a fun yet educational feed great for scrolling. Koala also has a great Instagram feed, jammed with pictures of koalas and beautifully styled homes for inspo.
Finish off and lock everything in with your Night Cream Of Choice. Go-To Very Useful Face Cream is ultra-moisturising and packed with potent antioxidants that will protect skin from free radical damage (caused by UV rays, environmental pollutants, toxins, etc). It also leaves skin soft, soothed, and nice-smelling, if you’re into that kind of thing.
That’s it! You’re done! All that’s left to do now is collapse into your pillow, and watch an episode (or five) of Love Is Blind.
This post is in no way sponsored by Go-To. (It was written by them though so…)
